Well gang, this is it. I'm sitting in the floral bedroom in the downstairs of my parent's house. My two suitcases are upstairs ready to go, my carry-on and laptop backpack are all ready as well, and I've got my yen and traveller's checks all in order. My carry-on is stuffed and I was barely able to get one suit (w/2 pairs of pants), plus shoes, plus slippers, plus jammies, plus underwear, plus socks, plus ties all packed in, but managed it somehow. I also packed several bags of cooking spices in one of my pieces of luggage - I hope that doesn't slow me down in customs. I've weighed all my luggage and it's fine, but man, everything feels heavy and crammed to the gills.
I wish I could get over the feeling I'm forgetting something. I've looked in my carry-on over and over to make sure I have enough stuff to get me through the week - but I keep imagining that I packed in insufficient light and that I'll put on my suit for the first day of training only to find that I packed the navy slacks (guh! what a word.) with the charcoal jacket and it will be too late to do anything about it. These are the silly things running through my head so I open and close my suit cases a zillion times - it's at times like this that my OCD comes out in full force.
Well, the biggest thing I want to say on this blog is that I'm so thankful to have so many great friends and family in my life. To everyone reading this, thanks for being such a huge part of my life and thanks for being so super supportive as I've planned for this experience. I'm very glad we can keep in touch via e-mail, chat, skype, blogs, etc. Now, I'm not sure exactly when I'll next get to a computer, but I'll try and at least check in.
Take care everyone, Utsunomiya here I come!

Good luck, Matty! Bon voyage!
Troy
Best of luck, Matt. This is going to be one of the best experiences of your life and you are going to learn so much about the world and yourself. It will be tough at first, but worth it in the end.
Keep us posted!!!!
Chances are, if you're reading this, you're already in Japan. Congrats: you made it! How was the trip? Were you talking to your shoes and clawing at the window by the end of your 13-hour (guh!) flight?
Hope you are well, buddy.
Matt, in honor of you, I am working on a Sudoku puzzle (although I REALLY should be working on writing a research paper). Hey cool you can help me PROCRASTINATE even though you're clear over in Japan!! In all seriousness dude, I hope you had a pleasant flight and you were able to settle in and relax the whole time. Don't forget to have fun!
COME BACK!
Oh, all right - see you in a year. Take care of yourself and let us know you got there safely.
Panko says hi!

Until your blog is updated again, I am going to be very, very sad.
All day I was thinking about you. Matt's probably getting on the plane now. Matt's probably over Hawaii now. Matt's probably got a cramp in his leg now.
And then, at the Music Cafe, the Clap dipped herself, and I couldn't stand not having you there to laugh at it. :(
You're in Japan now! I hope everyone is treating you as well as you deserve. Lots of love westward.
Hey Matty,
We'll miss you! Thanks for being a good sport about Karma Chameleon when Rick and I bailed on our songs.
Have fun!!
