Well, I finally made it up to Nikko today. Michel and I met outside of our office building this morning at 10 and biked to the station. From there, it was a short 40 minute train ride. Nikko is by far the most beautiful place I've seen in Japan so far - and today it was exceptional - it was warm and misty and the mountains were beautiful. I'm not good with historical commentary (I'd just be plagiarizing my "Lonely Planet" book anyway) so I will simply let you look at the pics, which don't begin to capture the beauty of the place:
Yes, they call me Matto san or Matto sensei. There is no single "T" sound in Japanese - you can only choose from: ta, chi, tsu, te, or to. So I get "to." Michel calls me Matto -the natto- sensei. grrrrr.... :)

That pic of the row of lanterns is fantastic!
The frog thing is a shinto shrine, and beyond that, I have no idea. Maybe it's a shrine for children.
beautiful pictures matt! it makes me want to see Japan...its definitely now on my travel list.
Beautiful, Matt.
Please tell me they call you Matto over there.
Matto: eat natto!
(just kidding. please don't eat natto.)
