The rest of these pictures are of the Senso-ji shrine in Asakusa. It was fun to walk on the grounds of this enormous shrine, waft incense up my nose and look at trinket shops along the boulevard heading to the shrine. The huge lanterns are amazing to see up close, and the people watching was great.

"derful!" Isn't it?

Great pictures Matt! Keep them coming...
Matty: for some reason, you seem much less bald on the blog than over Skype.
OH, COME ON, even when I'm saying dumb things like that you miss me. Keep your eyes out for an unintentionally hilarious Japanese teeshirt for me, and I will be sending you a big (okay, pretty small) box soon. Right after we get paid.
Derful, indeed!
I think you should steal one of these big lanterns. They're pretty amazing, and I think you could get away with it. Just...slowly take it down, say "Oh, THAT'S where I put my hat!" And rest it on your head all-the-while-looking non-chalant and trotting away.
Good. I will be contributing to X's small box. Heh-heh. I'll let you fill in the rest of that disgusting joke.
Those are fantastically derful.
(Will derful ever get old? Survey says: no.)
The lanterns kind of made me think of Shin Cups... you know, the ramen noodles in the red cup with the black writing? Except I think the Shin Cups are in Chinese, so I'm probably just proving how ignorant I am.
Meh. Ramen is tasty!
I love the photos. I'm curious about what's in and around Utsunomiya.
Next time in Sensoji you should shop in a paper products store behind the vendors to the right as you walk past the large lantern. It has great souvenirs made of paper (coasters, wallets, trays, et cetera). High quality products unlike a few of the vendors in the booths. Asakusa has been a center for crafts in Tokyo for a very long time.
Your pictures are fabderful, Matt. You are doing a good job via your blog in igniting a serious travel flame in my belly. Although, having never been to Asia, these photos are right now stirring up incredibly innacurate memories of the Asia sectors of Epcot Center.
I'm glad you're doing well in Japantown, then.
