Hmmm...

Let's see.

I'm really only posting today out of some weird sense of obligation, not because I want to. And it's not like I don't have things to blog about:

- I had two days of interviews with the corporation I hope to be teaching English for in Japan in a few months time.

-I have gotten much faster at writing websites in my current job and am getting good feedback.

So...what gives? How come I feel not-so-forthcoming? I really don't know.

I think it could be several things.

First, I spend five days a week writing marketing copy for other people - that gets a bit tiring, I think.

Second, although I have had what I feel are successful interviews for this Japan job, I still won't hear definitively about my job until October 7th. So rather than feeling excited about a new job, I mostly feel like I'm in a holding tank.

Third, we use the Chicago Manual of Style here at work which means - among other things - I can only put one space between the period that ends one sentence and the word that begins the following one. Same goes for colons. Now at work I have to change my Word settings to catch this problem. When I e-mail work home and work from my laptop, I try doing the one space thing and get the wavy green lines because there aren't two spaces. I don't like to change my laptop settings because this removal of a space thing would be a fairly big step for me.

I know it's dumb, but psychologically, it's a tough one for me. I really like the look of those two spaces - they make sense to me and seem homey and human as opposed to the single space which makes me think the world is getting colder and colder.

I want to know why the rule was changed and who's responsible.

Hi, dapper-

Not sure if you really wanted an answer, but I can provide one (direct from our writing center to you!). The CMS reasoning was OK - stuff about publishing programs and so on - but I remain a two-spacer.

Still thinking about your tie,
Liz
